On March 25 and 26, the 12,000-member-strong Association of Management, Administrative, and Professional Crown Employees of Ontario (AMAPCEO) is holding a strike vote in the face of the Liberal governments dictate for further concessions. AMAPCEO members include policy analysts, financial analysts, arbitrators, scientists, chaplains, veterinarian, program supervisors, child and youth advocates, psychiatric patient advocates, media relations and communications officers, epidemiologists, arts granting officers and many others. This is an historic vote because this is the first time that AMAPCEO members will vote for a strike as a tactic to back their demands for a just collective agreement. Under the unions strike vote policy, this is the first vote in a two-stage process, which it explains as follows: a majority of those voting in favour would be authorizing local, limited job actions. A second strike vote would be required to authorize a full-scale unit-wide withdrawal of services. We are required by legislation to refer to both the first and second strike votes as strike votes, even though the first vote does not authorize a full-scale withdrawal of services.
