PL-2 Setting a New Course for the Life Course: Advancing the Framing of Concept, Measurement, and Practice TODAY from 4:00 PM – 5:30 PM in Phoenix ABC Speakers: Michael Lu, Neal Halfon, and Paula Braveman Since the life course framework was introduced 15 years ago, debate and discussion over its meaning and application in public health research has been on-going. In February, the Maternal and Child Health Journal released an issue dedicated to the efforts to date on developing the life course framework. In this issue, experts in the field recommended moving the framework forward by focusing on implementation activities in research, measuring collective impact rather than summarizing the outcomes of individual programs, and in policy, shifting from reimbursing for treatment of identified conditions/outcomes to allocating funds to build capacity in primary prevention. The issue also highlighted areas where emphasis should be placed when examining and developing research and programs addressing the life course including the role of the health care delivery system, and the impact of issues related to health equity. It is imperative that the MCH community engage in a renewed discussion on the life course framework, within the context of historic clinical and public health changes. With implementation of health care reform, integration of health care systems into applied work in the field of MCH is critical. Discussions are required to determine duplicative measures, gaps, and new measurement techniques that support systems evaluation effectiveness assessments. Examining how issues of equity impact access, resiliency, and long-term health are paramount to meet the needs of MCH populations
