People Watching in Chillicothe While waiting for the Ross County - TopicsExpress

People Watching in Chillicothe While waiting for the Ross County Historical Society to open in Chillicothe, OH on Tuesday, we decided to get a quick snack at a nearby Wendy’s. As a brief aside, for those who might not know me very well I really enjoy watching people all around me and engaging almost everyone in conversation if there is any opportunity to do so. While we were “dining” and talking about the information I had found at my earlier stop at the County Courthouse Archives, I couldn’t help noticing a young man sitting a few table away preparing to start his meal. The preparation of his straw caught my attention. He prepared it as most pdo by taking off the tip and then tearing off the wrapper. Then he blew through the straw as if to insure that it was clear. He then put the straw into his soda and proceeded to drink it. Within a few minutes a friend joined him at the table for lunch. Well, I could hardly contain myself; I wanted to know why he had treated the straw in that manner? Possibly he had swallowed a bug as a child. Maybe his parents had a bad experience and had trained him as a young child? But Charlene said; “…it wouldn’t be polite to interrupt with such trivial questions..." Finally I had to go to the restroom and since I had to walk right past them it wouldn’t hurt if I briefly interrupted their conversation, introduced myself, briefly explained my observation and asked my question. Well as it turns out the fellow wasn’t even aware he prepared his drinking straw in such a unique manner. We all laughed, I excused myself and continued to the restroom and back. The two fellows finished their meal before we did and as they left, the fellow stopped at our table and said; “…from now on every time I use a straw I am going try to figure out what is behind this process of preparing it…” Charlene and Debbie dropped me off at the Historical Society for a couple of hours and they did some sightseeing. My Great-Grandparents William J & Anna E. (Bice) Dunlop had not owned any property during their approximately six years (1874 - 1880) in Chillicothe. House numbers were not in use during that time period but the three specific neighborhoods in which they rented houses were identified and we were able drive through them. All were in the vicinity of the railroad yards and shops (no longer existing). A few of the vintage homes exist but most were destroyed in floods and urban renewal.
