Portnellan time trials: Crianlarich John McAfee (me) set an impressive time of 2mins 20secs closely followed by Chris Hattan on 2mins 22secs with the drama of his chain coming off on the final 100m uphill sprint to the line. JJ McAfee went off in blistering form with a halfway lead of 1min 5secs having completed the mountain section. Then, coming into the perilous downhill section of the course at the 3/4 stage, he lost control at death gorge corner. Disaster struck the man wearing the yellow jersey (aka hi-vis jacket) he panicked, hit the brakes hard & somersaulted over the handlebars with a leg still caught on the bike it landed hard on top of him. The crowd looked on with baited breath having heard the dull thud & painful groans of a man that had just realised his dream of winning at Portnellan was now no more than a six inch leg gouge, 2 staved wrists, a badly swollen elbow & some head cuts filled with gravel & forest pine. A sense of disappointment was hidden beneath blood & bruise. Emergency teams (self & Chris) were on the scene in minutes.... he was stripped of the yellow jacket & evacuated to a nearby mountain lodge for first aid & trauma treatment Reporting from the scene John McAfee Sky News Team
