ROLE MODELS AND HEROES:: JON BOWDEN In this age of forgotten chivalry and cavalier arrogance, its rather refreshing to see character and morals on display, no matter the source. For more than twenty years, Derek Jeter, of the New York Yankees, has shown the world, and especially young people that you can be in the lime light and practice character and morals at he same time..In his farewell tour around the league, opposing players and fans alike paused to honor this great ambassador to the game of baseball. We assign the heavy burden of being role models to professional athletes, when that job should start at home with parents. Being avid sports fans is an American tradition passed down through the generations. But, we must be careful with our selection of who we expect our kids to look up to. With every passing day, we hear of various athletes committing the most horrific things.Derek Jeter has stayed above the fray. He is one athlete that we can all admire easily. I remember the term I want to be like Mike , a reference made to the great Michael Jordan that was the cry of young people doing Mr. Jordans stellar career as a professional basketball player. Derek Jeter has carried that banner with grace and humility. If young people still care about role models, then I recommend Derek Jeter as the one to emulate...JUST SAYING!!!!!!!!
