RUBY’S PEARLY WHITES Ruby is a six year old lurcher belonging to Laura, one of Willows’ Registered Veterinary Nurses. Laura had noticed that Ruby had recently developed particularly bad breath (halitosis). Ruby was examined by one of Willows’ primary care team, Noella Cooper. Noella recommended that Ruby was given a general anaesthetic to better examine her mouth, and that a dental procedure was carried out at the same time, to remove the tartar that had built up on her teeth which was causing inflammation of her gums (gingivitis). As you can see from the before and after photos (see the link below) quite a lot of tartar needed to be removed. There was also another surprise. Ruby had an extra tooth also known as a ‘supernumerary tooth’. This tooth was poorly positioned and as a result had become infected and required extraction – the infection associated with this tooth was the likely cause of Ruby’s halitosis. Ruby recovered uneventfully from her dental procedure and was off enjoying some time at the beach within a few days. Her mum is busy brushing her teeth regularly in order to maintain her smile and her fresh breath! Dental disease is common in cats and dogs, so it’s important to have regular dental check-ups. Your vet can advise you whether any treatment is needed and how to maintain your pet’s teeth.
