Remembering the malls.... I was one of the first people to visit Quakerbridge Mall when it opened in 1976 via bus. I fondly remember Spaceport and the attendants dressed in a space like jumpsuit. These dudes would change your dollar bills for quarters, and occasionally open up a machine that swallowed your quarter. I remember the games such as Duck Hunt with the rifle, and another western game where you would shoot a holographic cowboy with a pistol. My favorite was a car racing game with a clutch and shifter. The point of that game was to pass all the other drivers without them hitting you. And of course those cool Kiss and Playboy pinball machines. I used to love going to the record stores there: Wall To Wall Sound, Record Museum, Record Bar and Beakys. Better than Korvettes, they had all the imported vinyl especially from the UK. Then in 1977, Mercer Mall opened with K-Mart, Red Moon Pizza, Cork n Keg bar, and Daniels ( which was a catalog showroom outlet). WFIL famous 56 DJ s George Michael and Jim OBrian were there for the grand opening. Jim OBrian was a famous 56 Boss Jock before he was the weatherman at WPVI TV. I used to listen to them on the AM radio when I went to Seaside Heights. Daniels was later replaced by Crazy Eddies record and tape asylum. There was also the game room next to the Cork n Keg bar. This is where I played my first Atari tennis video game. Dont forget folks this was cutting edge technology at the time. Soon after both malls were in business, a lot of local businesses closed or at the very least, suffered declining sales. I still remember the cheesy WPST Ewing Bazaar radio jingle: When you shop at the mall, your money wont go far, so browse at the mall, but buy, at the bazaar! Those were the days when Steve Trevelese was there at WPST.
