Santa Barbara Yoga Center Announces 1st Annual Accessible Yoga Conference Co-Hosted by Integral Yoga Institute - San Francisco September 12-13, 2015 Santa Barbara, CA — The Accessible Yoga Conference evolved from the Accessible Yoga Teacher Training, which was created in 2007 by Rev. Jivana Heyman to train people with disabilities to become Yoga teachers, as well as train yoga teachers to work with people with disabilities, chronic illnesses, injuries, and the elderly. The Accessible Yoga Conferences mission is to provide a forum where the Yoga community can come together to connect, share, and support those who wish to expand access to the Yoga teachings for people with disabilities. Current yoga conferences don’t specifically address these populations, and the Accessible Yoga Conference will attempt to remedy this situation by offering training, networking, and general awareness of adaptive yoga. According to Heyman, “Yoga is at a tipping point in our society. There is a renewed interest and acceptance of these ancient healing techniques, so now is the time to make these teachings available to everyone. My hope is that the Accessible Yoga Conference supports the transition from yoga for the few to yoga for everybody.” The conference will feature keynote speaker Matthew Sanford, [matthewsanford] the award-winning author of Waking: A Memoir of Trauma and Transcendence. Sanford, who became paralyzed from the chest down in a car accident at age 13, is a nationally recognized yoga teacher. He is a leading voice in the integrative health movement and founder of the groundbreaking nonprofit Mind Body Solutions. Sanford explains the power of yoga for transformation, “Deepening the connection between mind and body is more than a personal health strategy. It is a practical shift in consciousness that can transform the world. In fact, I believe our long-term survival depends upon this shift becoming reality. My life is dedicated to helping it happen.” There will be many other presenters at the Accessible Yoga Conference including Rev. Jivana Heyman and Marsha Danzig, [yogaforamputees] Yoga Teacher, RYT500, M.ed Harvard. Danzig is a below the knee amputee losing her leg in 1976 to Ewing’s sarcoma. She is the founder of Yoga for Amputees, a program to help amputees move forward in their lives through the healing power of yoga embodying hope and possibilities.
