Sheryl -- A message from Laurie Cumbo THE MOMENTUM IS BUILDING! Everywhere I go people are giving us the thumbs up and the Brooklyn “I got you” on every street corner. As you all know, success and winning comes with a price. As we come down to the final two weeks of the campaign, my opponents have decided to run a very aggressive negative campaign. This must be how Obama felt when running against Mitt Romney! And let’s be honest, there are a whole lot of people that live for negative campaigns and back stabbing and gossip and character assassinations. But then there are a whole lot more people that want to talk constructively and thoughtfully about the issues that are facing our community. I am running a positive campaign and I have been committed to that from the very beginning. When you have been a community builder your whole life devoted to bringing all types of people together, it goes against everything that I stand for to attack another member of the community. I have devoted my whole life to making Brooklyn, New York a better place to live starting with my first job at the age of sixteen cleaning and maintaining Prospect Park and later working at the Brooklyn Children’s Museum, The Brooklyn Museum of Art, Pratt Institute and founding the Museum of Contemporary African Diasporan Arts (MoCADA), which has been serving underserved communities for over thirteen years. I made the decision to run for office and made the hard decision to leave the institution that I founded because I recognized that Brooklyn’s prosperity was not inclusive of the very people such as my family that have given of their blood, sweat and tears to make Brooklyn what it is today. I remain more committed to that goal of creating a more equitable Brooklyn than ever before with each and every one of you that I meet on the campaign trail. I have and will always be a fighter for the underserved, the marginalized, the voiceless and those that have not been given an opportunity to be the very best that they can be in life. It is said that past performance is the greatest indicator of future performance and while my competitors are attempting to win at all costs even at the destruction of others, I hope that my commitment and dedication to Brooklyn will speak louder than their negative attacks ever could. I know that Brooklyn is worthy of leaders with a real track record of results that are capable of representing the District with dignity, honesty, and class and that is why I am proud to have earned the endorsement of Congressman Hakeem Jeffries, Congresswoman Yvette Clarke and Assemblyman Walter Mosley. I respect their leadership and their dedication to fight for affordable housing, better schools, good paying jobs and safer communities. The future of our community is at stake and I hope that you will share this email out with your networks and ask them to also share it out. It is time that we drown out negativity and send a strong message on September 10th that we do not tolerate individuals that are committed to dividing our community but rather we support individuals that have the experience to bring the community together. With warmest regards, laurie_sig.jpg Laurie Cumbo 2013
