So my friend Xavier and I went to go see Guardians of the Galaxy today, due to overwhelming hype. The guy at the comic store has seen it three times, and everyone on facebook is raving about it. And neither Xavier nor I can see the appeal. Its just an ok movie. So its not bad, its just not good. Probably the least entertaining Marvel movie. Im not super familiar with the comics, and I suspect fans will get more out of the movie. But there was no depth. You have some super creative characters and no reasoning behind them, and little development if any. Why does this muscled guy have tattoos all over him, why is he in prison, and why would you take an idiot homicidal maniac with you? Most of the other cast play thier same role throughout the movie, with little development other than the female lead Gamora, whos motives are unclear. Most of the humor is flat. Marvel movies try to pepper occasional humor in them at odd times and its god for a laugh. This movie doesnt pepper it, it takes the top off the shaker and poors it on. Yes, we know you can just say your name, and we know youre not a racoon. It wasnt that funny the first two times, now its like im watching family guy, the sheer amout of joke repetition. Also, with literally infinite locations available, everything feels generic. Generic space prison, generic space city, generic villian ship. Lets mention something that is almost interesting about a place (this resorce satellite is a dead gods head that is mined) and then stop talking about it and the interesting thing makes no plot difference. Character falls into green space goop. Does it do anything special? No, he just almost drowns. You know what else does that? EVERY LIQUID EVER. Altogether, im dissapointed. Xavier fell asleep twice duribg the movie, and agrees that the movie was just lackluster. Oh, and the after credit scene was pointless and not funny. Oh well, at least theres new jinja turtles.
