So yes I love books In our living room there is what some might think of as a tatty old suitcase but I like to think it’s vintage. Stacked inside it is a collection of 1970’s Ladybird fairy tales which were the inspiration behind my novel Second Hand Jane or more to the point a name scribbled inside the cover of Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs was. I also have a bookcase overflowing with collectible Enid Blyton annuals, novels and story books. In fact, I have just mentally tallied up six bookcases scattered around our house. There are two in the lounge, one in the office and the boys each have one in their rooms. Number six is out in the sleep-out with the kind of books you might find in an old bach or in a basket by the loo. So yes I love books. My first job was putting away books for three hours on a Friday night at Mt Roskill Public Library and my greatest achievement at Primary School was winning the ASB Story Writing Competition for which I received a Whitcoulls book voucher. Being able to choose whatever book I wanted with my own winnings was thrilling and I get a similar buzz when I find a book I have been waiting to read for ages sitting on the shelf at the library. It’s the anticipation of being thoroughly entertained. So yes I love books. Then a friend from my Book Club loaned me her Kindle and I was smitten. I tweeted yesterday as to it having taken nigh on 10 hours and one big row to get my new to me but second hand Kindle up and running. There is something inherently stressful about a device that ultimately you know is straightforward but which you simply can’t fathom. I have to say though that when the penny finally dropped and I keyed in the right password I got that same tingle of excitement I get when I find that sought after book. I still love books but I think there’s definitely room in my life for my Kindle too. michellevernal
