Something I want to share. Williams syndrome is a genetic disease where a person has elven characteristics - amazing interpersonal skills, yet are often in fact depressed. Some say the mythology of elves as happy-go-lucky creatures stems from this. I am not saying Robin Williams was struck by this at all (he doesnt have the facial features)...but isnt the connection odd? The point is, Ive learned in my life never assume someone is happy because they are the life of the party and can make anyone laugh. It may simply be compensation for emptiness. The best you can do if you are faced with this situation is find purpose through faith. Some of us may be inclined genetically to be depressed or addicted or whatever, but ultimately, we each have the power within us to choose our actions. That includes disciplining our thoughts. IMO, our purpose in life is not to find happiness. Emotions by definitions waver. Desire is like a stomach - asked what it devoured yesterday, it complains as though it never ate! I rather strive to find peace - be it in the midst of ecstasy or difficulty - and Ive consciously chosen Islam as my way. Even the word Islam shares the root word for Salam, meaning peace.
