Something is rotten in the West European chess kingdoms. The - TopicsExpress

Something is rotten in the West European chess kingdoms. The European Youth Championship has just finished with a huge number of medals for Russia (11 out of overall 36 !) , 5 for Azerbaijan, 4 for Georgia, 3 for Armenia... These are the countries with a rich chess tradition, you say? But then, you have 2 medals for Greece, Estonia and Turkey - and along with that no single medal for UK, France, Germany, Netherlands, Scandinavian countries... I think professional chess and youth chess are co-dependent, and I expect the chiefs of the Western Europe chess federations to draw some conclusions for the sake of chess in their countries for years to come, as you cant always count on once-in-fifty years phenomenon like Magnus Carlsen, growing up against all odds.
