Sports Deputy Minister STEVEN MASUMBA has been sentenced to 12 months imprisonment with hard labour by the Lusaka Magistrate court for fraudulently obtaining a diploma as an accounting technician which he used to gain employment. Mr. MASUMBAs sentence takes effect from November 18, 2013 when he was convicted. But the youthful Deputy Minister has however, been granted a ten thousand Kwacha cash bail with two working sureties pending appeal to the High Court against the verdict of the Magistrate court. Magistrate WIFRED MUMA says it is the duty of the court to protect the nation from unprofessional conduct and Mr MASUMBAs sentence should serve as a warning to any person in possession of fake documents. The Magistrate wondered the caliber of students taught by Mr. MASUMBA when he served as a Lecturer at Lusaka Business and Technical College using a fake academic certificate from NIPA. In mitigation Mr. MASUMBAs lawyer MUTAKELA LISIMBA said it was regrettable that his client found himself in unfortunate circumstances and has learnt lessons from what has transpired. He said Mr. MASUMBA is a family man, a Member of Parliament and a serving Deputy Minister in government and as such, imprisoning him will put his family and people in his constituency in disarray.
