TOMMY Athlete Spotlight!! From Tommy: After my family reunion in July 2013, I was the heaviest I had ever been. I was already on high blood pressure medicine and was feeling pretty bad. My family medical history was not in my favor. My mom has had two heart attacks and my dad’s family had a lot of diabetes and liver failure. When I lost my dad I was 5 years old. I was worried that I might not be there for my little family. In August 2013, my neighbors Cory and Jed, were talking a lot about Crossfit. They wanted me to check out a gym in some guy’s garage. Soon the peer pressure had me going that Saturday and every Saturday. When the box opened, I found myself showing up on Fridays too and whenever I could. My kids started getting into it, chanting at me to “Get Your Fit On!” My schedule changed and suddenly I would be there 5 or 6 days a week. The peer pressure had turned into wanting to show support for Josh. It then turned into my desire to support my Crossfit family. I was happy that I could do some things right away. I could do kettle bells and almost any bar complex easily. My 400 meter run was not so good. I only ran 100 meters of it. I got so much support on air squats, wall balls and everything in between. Anne Shilling straight up told me I was doing my tractor tire jump wrong. She was right, of course and I was motivated to get it perfect the next time. I can now clear a 42 inch box jump! I have continued to stay motivated by the relationships I have made and reaching my goals. The best part is that I have inspired my family to get healthier and we have all made changes that we actually enjoy and want to keep. Don’t get me wrong, I still hate Crossfit! But RXing the WODS, doing handstand pushups and wall walks, double unders, completing a half marathon and ringing that bell are accomplishments I am really proud of. As I continue to learn from you all and am inspired by each and every one of your stories, I hope to be that inspiration for someone else. Love and Aloha, Tommy
