The 3rd Dr. Ashok Da Ranade Memorial Lecture A SHORT HISTORY OF HOW JAZZ BECAME AN INDIAN MUSIC by Naresh Fernandes (Well-known journalist and author, focusing on urban issues, music and diasporas, among other subjects) Venue: Hall of Harmony, Nehru Centre, Dr. A. B. Road, Worli, Mumbai - 400018 7 PM on Tuesday, November 25, 2014 Naresh Fernandes will speak about his research on jazz in India and play illustrative samples from archival recordings. His work in this realm of musical research can be accessed in his book entitled Taj Mahal Foxtrot: The Story of Bombay’s Jazz Age, as well as on his blog tajmahalfoxtrot. As a writer with a deep interest in social history and who is concerned about socially relevant issues, Naresh Fernandes brings with him a rich treasure of information about the past with anecdotal references and analysis woven in with the practised ease of a lively raconteur. To many, the influence of jazz and the association of its practitioners with film music will come as a delightful revelation. The talk will help enhance our understanding in a historical context of the terms ‘fusion and ‘confluence’ that are otherwise considered recent phenomena in our music. Entry is free.
