Ray Gearing has been retired from a 40-year career as a Presbyterian minister for 24 years. Since his retirement, he has traveled full-time in a motor home through 49 states. Ray came to Escapees Care with his first wife, Ruth, because she had Alzheimers disease and they needed the benefits the program provided. They had four children. Ruth passed away years ago. Susie and Ray have worked together since 1996 and collaborated on a vespers program for CARE and park residents. Subsequently, they worked together on a number of projects related to the CARE program. In 2001, they began the work necessary to establish a Habitat for Humanity affiliate in Polk County, a task that was accomplished in 2003 when the group was recognized by Habitat for Humanity International. Since then, the local Habitat affiliate has built 16 homes, currently occupied by over 60 homeowners and their family members. Susie and Ray were married in 2003. In addition, Ray is president of the Polk County Emergency Health Board (Susie was president for three years earlier). They both sing in the choir at First United Methodist Church of Livingston. Susie and Ray have been recognized for their volunteer work. Ray is 88 years young and he is very proud of his age, and on his birthday each year he shows off by walking and getting others to walk. And when asked why he is still walking at 88, he said, Because I can. Im in good shape because I walk a few miles every day with my dogs. Im going to do this as long as I am physically capable of it! Ray Gearing, who is president emeritus of the local Habitat for Humanity affiliate, asks for sponsorships for his walk each year in order to support the work Habitat is doing in Polk County in reaching its goal of eliminating poverty housing in Polk County, one house at a time.
