The Morning Report The day yesterday began with a bang. After all - TopicsExpress

The Morning Report The day yesterday began with a bang. After all the chores were done and a lunch packed for the hay field; I exited the door and so did Alvin. Alvin has been observing the chickens, turkeys and guineas for the time he has been here. He was very intent on watching them through the front windows while they are in the flower beds. He would travel from window to window to watch them and I guess when I opened the door to leave; it was his time to get a close look. He bolted out the door without slowing down even though I had told him “stay” prior to opening the door. He proceeded to chase all the chickens and the wild turkeys that were in the yard. Of course I was hollering at him to come, stop or anything but chasing these birds. He chased one of the white turkeys into the backyard (which is the dogs yard) and continued to chase chickens. He finally caught one of the brown hens but before I could get to him, he was off again. He saw a cat and went after that and it went up a tree and then it was chase more chickens. Kathy figured that she would put Molly in the backyard and leave the door open into the house so possibly Alvin would go into the house. What Kathy didn’t know was the turkey was in the back yard. Molly caught the turkey. I was able to get her away from it and put her on the porch and Alvin came into the backyard. I caught the turkey and carried it to the chicken pen and set it down. I couldn’t find any open wounds and when I sat it down, it walked off. Then I went to get what I thought was a dead chicken, when I got to it and reached down to pick it up, it ran off. Then we found another hiding by the dogs backyard that wasn’t moving but when I reached down to pick it up, it ran off. We had chickens, turkeys and guineas scattered all over the place and I figured that all was okay. Later that day we found that the turkey had died but it appears that is the only thing that died from this escapade. I did take Alvin on a leash back to the chicken pen and we had a discussion about not chasing chickens or any of the fowl that we have. It got his attention for a few moments anyhow and now more discussion will be forth coming. He will be learning some manners, like coming when he is called. He will learn not to chase those chickens and he will learn not to go out that door unless we tell him it is okay. I know that it will be a job but everything is and believe me, he will know better when he is taught. Right now he knows a little but he will have to learn manners. He will have to adjust to our way of living and forget what he wants to do most of the time. I know that Kathy and I are too old to be chasing a dog that doesn’t want to be caught, that will change. I had to sit down for a while after this incident that had me chasing this dog all over the yard. After a 20 or 30 minute break, it was onto the hayfield and loading another load of hay; also finishing up the field that I had started mowing the day before. I was done by about 2 o’clock and home with the hay unloaded by 3 and sitting in my chair watching TV with my eyes closed and it felt good. Grayson was watching the entire chase of the dog and I believe that he wanted to be involved in it but just couldn’t get there. He advised when he was fed that he could have caught Alvin, although I have seen him chase the chickens out of his paddock, maybe he just wanted to help chase the chickens. Y’all have a great and wonderful day and remember to take a moment to smell the roses!
