There was a joint sitting of both houses held in Canberra this morning, to welcome the Prime Minister of Japan, Shinzo Abe, to Australia. The visiting Prime Minister gave a very moving address, in which he expressed condolences for those killed during World War Two, and stressed Japan’s ongoing commitment to working closely with Australia and other allies to maintain peace in our region. As the Japanese PM left the House of Representatives chamber, I was pleased to be able to shake his hand, and to thank him for his warm words underlining the ever-strengthening relationship between our two countries.
