This is my son Brads comment on todays events. Yeah. Im proud of him. My take on what happened in Ottawa today: On the news here in Britain, newscasters are calling it an end to Canadas innocence, and a wake up call and even that we should have seen it coming. Insensitivity and horrific ignorance aside: it is none of those things. British television used the event as an excuse to criticise Canadas methods of maintaining international relations, and of how we engage with our allies in war. It is not innocent to avoid unnecessary conflicts, it is not a wake up call when a soldier is murdered on the steps of a Vimy Ridge memorial, and Im proud to be from a country where this is shocking. We are who we are because we choose to be, not because we havent been forced to be something else yet. A man died as honour guard to a memorial honouring all Canadians who have died in war. Do not expect to see us change. We will do the same thing we would have done before today: we will honour him.
