Three months ago I was totally burnt out on Rods Weekly Dose of Dylan and so I gave it up. For a while I have been saying I was going to do one for Jerry Garcias birthday and The Days Between celebration, and I so I have. I did have a little trouble getting the motivation to complete it but now that I have, Im very happy to share. Not being constrained by commercial radio, I used two songs here and took up 16 minutes, but of course I could easily have used up 2 hours. The first song is from the first time Dylan and Garcia shared the stage together and its a beauty! You can really hear the love in Dylans voice as he introduces Garcia to the crowd. The 2nd one is of the last recording Jerry ever made, for the Jimmie Rodgers tribute album that Dylan produced. Jerrys voice is weak, but he does a courageous job yodeling and its really beautiful, brings a tear to my eye every time I hear it. Enjoy! As always, lots of good links for further research in the comments. “He gave rock ‘n’ roll the thing I wished it had when I was a kid – respectability, some authority. He took it out of the realm of ignorant guys banging away on electric instruments and put it somewhere else altogether.” Garcia on Dylan There is no way to measure his greatness or magnitude as a person or a player. I dont think any eulogizing will do him justice. He was that great, much more than a superb musician, with an uncanny ear and dexterity. Hes the very spirit personified of whatever is Muddy River country at its core and screams up into the spheres. He really had no equal. To me, he wasnt only a musician and friend, he was more like a big brother who taught and showed me more than hell ever know. Theres a lot of spaces and advances between The Carter Family, Buddy Holly and say Ornette Coleman, a lot of universes, but he filled them all without being a member of any school. His playing was moody, awesome, sophisticated, hypnotic and subtle. Theres no way to convey the loss. It just digs down really deep. Bob Dylan, Eulogy of Jerry Garcia, August 10, 1995.
