To Parents The Importance of Childs Education The purpose of education is to prepare a good path to our children for life. Encouraging and nourishing the potential in every child is important so that each child connects and contributes his/her unique ideas and abilities to society. Investing in this education is necessary for them tomorrow, for you as a family and for the community in general. I repeat, the childs education will definitely contribute a better tomorrow, will bring a healthy united community that transcends illiteracy, meager earnings and poor livelihood. In order to educate our children, we need to ask ourselves what we have done so far to develop our childrens future. Life is not about bringing too many kids to the world, it is about teaching them manners, the education and proper coaching they need until they can take care of themselves. Let me make an analogy here. We are aware that wild animals teach their cabs how to hunt at a younger age. Why? Just to survive in this vicious world. Why cant we provide our kids an educative tool to survive in this world? Our Somali parents out there have so much responsibility. I know most may assume putting a roof over their head or food on their table is their main responsibility. Getting the kids taken care of academically and intellectually is of a crucial task. Be involved in your childs education. Invest it today. Talk as much as you can to their teachers. Learn about their weaknesses and strengths at school. Learn about subjects they are struggling with. Learn about their reading comprehension, their math skills and writing ability. Being a parent doesnt make you know about what your child is doing or behaving at class. Its a different setting, unlike home. Encourage them to get their assignments done in a timely fashion so they dont fall behind. If parents are uneducated or poorly educated, go seek After-School Programs that are tailored for those struggling kids. Encourage them to read more. Supervise them often just to make sure they are on task. Trust me, if you are doing all I said above, you are providing an appropriate quality education that will enable your child or children to fulfill their potential and contribute to building a sustainable community tomorrow. Lets give the kids sound and collaborative learning experiences that foster critical thinking skills, robust academic proficiency, independence and self-sufficiency tomorrow. Thank you, Abdi
