Today is the 13th anniversary of 9/11. It is only fitting that on the eve of this day, President Obama gave a speech on how he plans to combat ISIS. President Obama claims he has constitutional authority to use military force in Iraq AND Syria because of legislation signed in the aftermath of this day 13 years ago, The 2001 Authorization of Military Force. That legislation authorized the President to use necessary and appropriate force against anyone he believed planned, authorized, committed, or aided, the 9/11 attacks. The 9/11 attacks were 13 years ago to the day, yet we are still using this piece of legislation to justify military campaigns in two more countries, against an enemy who had nothing to do with what happened on this day, but sprung into existence because of the policies we pursued after it. No matter how you feel about what kind of threat ISIS does or does not pose to the U.S., you should be concerned with the precedent that is being set in the last 13 years. A precedent that says we have a ruler who can wage war anywhere on the globe, anytime he pleases. Americans have to decide whether they want a king or representative government.
