UNIVERSITY OF BOTSWANA PRESS RELEASE: THE OLD LOGO AND INVOLVEMENT OF POLITICAL PARTIES IN AFFAIRS OF SRC Members of the public have heard of read misleading and speculative comments in the media concerning decisions made recently by the Council of the University of Botswana. These include some unfortunate statements published in the front page of the Mmegi Newspaper dated Thursday 26 June 2014 under the heading “UB Graduates fear certificate recall”, which are false and were purposefully calculated to cause fear and alarm to the public. There is no truth or substance that the decision to revert to the old Logo of the University of Botswana could result in a possible recall of graduation certificates. This is a bad example of irresponsible and reckless reporting in, and by a newspaper. It is noted that the University of Botswana cannot recall such events and/or confusion arising and/or materialising during 2008, when the use of the old logo changed to the one recently abandoned. Furthermore, no political parties have been banned at the University of Botswana. Therefore student can freely (as they have done in the past) participate to associate with any political party of their choice, and to exercise and enjoy their freedom of association within the confines of the Constitution of the Republic of Botswana and the University Governing Statutes, provided that political parties do not use the SRC or its facilities to further their aims and objectives. However, the Council had reminded the SRC to focus on its primary mandate for which it was created, that is of representing the students and promoting student welfare issues. Accordingly, the running of the SRC elections along party lines does undermine the SRC, students and above all, defeats the very purpose for which the SRC was established under section 88 (iii) of the University of Botswana Statutes.
