We have noticed that as we polish Guatemalan jadeite, there are tiny crystals that are interspersed throughout the rock, and these crystals have a tendency to break off and leave pits in the surface of the rock. Called “the orange peel effect”, this phenomenon makes it hard to get a perfect shine in the jade, especially with larger grain stones. As with a lot of people, we are trying to develop the best way to polish lower quality jade stones to a nice shine. If anyone has any tips, let us know! gemandjade.
