Weekend Angler Nearing first watch The moon descends into the early sky and The weekend angler rises before dawn Pouring hot coffee into worn bottles Sweaty palms gather rods and reels Fingers grope the tackle box Weights, hooks, and knife Mind the test-line, not to heavy or to light The line must tow the load And now so long sweet safety of the shore Salt and sea whip the wind Breaking waves deeper to the oceans floor Drop the anchor and toss the chum The first blood brings the draw Hungry schools swarm Eyeing the dancing dolls Hooded over the hooks of death Rods rise like ready warriors A hit, a hit, or a false alarm Now comes the test of the angler Lift the rod, no not to fast Lift and reel, lift and reel Taunt arms tug against the Powerful beast Who can breath Until it breaches the bow Bracing for the final haul The angler steadies himself for the fight Lift and reel, Lift and reel The line breaks and the catch escapes But the day has just begun
