What can I say to my friends who bring up black on black crime to try to say that we only care when a white person does it? I can never think of a strong defense :/ Anonymous white on white crime has almost the same statistics, but it’s never reported on? why is that? the argument that “race on race” crime is NOT a unique phenomenon occuring among black americans that myth has been debunked, the term itself is misleading, it’s true that a disproportionate number of murder victims are black, black people make up about 13% of the US population but 50% of homicide victims according to the FBI, these statistics get brought up by the media at every chance they get, but the claims aren’t truthful when you think about systemic racism and how it affects and causes violence in black and brown communities, all of that is ignored. whenever we talk about chicago we always hear the term, it’s been covered by almost every news outlet you can possibly think of but the news never covers the community and local government programs working to help stem the tide of violence in these underserved communities, on top of that, there are the mothers’ groups, the church groups, the rallies, and the efforts from local entertainers. the only people who bring up black on black crime but refuse to acknowledge that many other races have the same statistics are the people in power who aren’t paying attention to these communities where lives are being lost bc if they were they would realize that the murder rate is often fueled by the violent policing of black people in the united states and the gross underserving of communities made up by black and brown people. current racial disparities are a result of decades of racist housing policies and practices these policies have effectively robbed black people of the “american dream” you hear so much about, these policies have segregated neighborhoods thus prohibiting black residents from accumulating wealth in the form of buying houses or land, this creates pockets of poverty which fuels violence what i just explained is systemic racism and it shows up in every aspect of life here in america, black and brown children are more likely to attend schools segregated by both race and income white people are about six times more wealthy than black families. Just 43.5 percent of black americans own homes on top of all these disparities there’s america’s racist criminal justice system that does a great job of convincing black youth that their lives have no value, again, contributing to the violence and murder rate in these communities, if you have nothing to live for, if you’re treated like dirt, you’re going to be angry and that’s what’s happening to these young children. mike brown’s mom was on a radio station and she said something along the lines of how hard it was for her son to even make it to 18, how many black boys don’t graduate from high school, these statistics are also a product of systemic racism, it goes back to the disparities i just explained. so tell your friend that zeroing in on urban violence or so called “thuggish behavior” and “respectability politics” is basically just blaming racial disparities on black culture, when it’s not the fault of black people for being the victims of ongoing and everlasting systemic racism, mike brown died for no reason, he deserved to live, he was a young boy with a bright future, his death has sparked a number of important discussions about police brutality, systemic racism, a fundamentally flawed justice system and violence in black communities, all of these things are parts of a larger national issue but by all means, keep pointing your finger at chicago gang members and donating thousands of dollars to police officers who help to keep these racist laws intact, keep acting like white people aren’t arrested for things black people spend years in jail for, try to keep avoiding the truth bc it’s all going to come to a head, people are angry, people know more than ever about their rights and how to go about turning the system on its head by getting out and voting (even that’s trying to get stopped by racist voting laws) things have to change, too many people are dying because of america’s greatest failures which are our government and the justice system as a whole.
