When I was writing my MA degree 87/88 I composed some 75000 words in submission all proof written in pencil on the backs of old BBC schedules and scripts that I had collected over some 25 years. My typist that translated my scrawl into nice, clear double spaced lined 12 point text said the back side literature and my comments were far more interesting than the sociological text on the other side. Unfortunately this pencil scrawl ( easliy edited with an rubber eraser ) has long passed into eternity! I always say I must have been the only Warwick student that composed his first drafts entirely on the back of old BBC material. You see I was self funded, no grants for old geezers, and any economies I could make were crucial as the BBC had stopped paying me for the period.
