With these galloping horses I imagine myself riding a chariot in the sky. In my childhood I played a lot with horses made of clay, wood and coloured papier mâché. As I grew older my stable of horses became richer. Duldul horse came from the battlefield of Karbala, Ashwamegh was sent from the ancient India. A battered Italian horse of Mario Marini. A triumphant Trojan horse and the Chetak of Rana Pratap. Many more whose pedigree remains unidentified. Then comes a chance to visit China in 1952. Through the Great Wall I must have walked barefeet on the site where hundreds of terracotta horses were buried for centuries. Yet there on the surface of Chinese soil a canvas is spread over with hundred of horses painted by the great Chinese painter Xu Beihong. And all of a sudden all these Dulduls, Ashwameghs and Chetaks disappeared from my vision. A horse is born, then and there, called Husain. - MF Husain indigoblueart/site/exhibitions/online-exhibition-enter-the-horse-works-by-master-and-senior-artists-featuring-the-horse/
