YPFF if you know that Fort A P Hill in Caroline County is named after this man….. A.P. HILL: EARLY LIFE AND MILITARY SERVICE Ambrose Powell Hill was born on November 9, 1825, in Culpeper, Virginia. His father was a prominent politician and merchant whose connections helped Hill secure an appointment to the United States Military Academy at West Point in 1842. Hill was forced to repeat his third year at West Point due to an extended illness, and ranked 15th in a class of 38 upon graduation in 1847. * Did You Know? Confederate General A.P. Hill’s roommate at West Point was future Union General-in-Chief George B. McClellan. While in the U.S. Army the two friends competed for the affections of the woman who later became McClellan’s wife. The former classmates would meet in combat during the Civil War at the Seven Days Battles and the Battle of Antietam. Following Jacksons death in May 1863 at the Battle of Chancellorsville, Hill was promoted to lieutenant general and commanded the Third Corps of Robert E. Lees Army of Northern Virginia, which he led in the Gettysburg Campaign and the fall campaigns of 1863. His command of the corps in 1864–65 was interrupted on multiple occasions by illness, from which he did not return until just before the end of the war, when he was killed during the Union Army offensive at the Third Battle of Petersburg
