There are also several arrangements made for woodwinds, brasses and choir and I tend to lean on the string original. Barbers uncontested abilities in expressing his emotional epic has reached the ultimatum. His juxtaposition of harmony is clouded by layers of strings extreme timbre and unconventional use of key signatures that expose the beauty of agony, sorrow, despair and finally the ultimate hope. Adagio for Strings may seem too subtle and pessimistic, but Barber knows that the destination of his musical work has nothing to do with an ending but an eternity.
