picks and musings for 022514 by hsw 7 tracks 64 races Watermans Bay, is a minor stakes winning gelding down under- and as he is a gelding we can expect no offspring to carry on his collections of bloodlines into the future- foaled in 2007 in Australia, his pedigree line> Eternity Range x Parisian Princess x Ron Bon -would certainly stump this desert dweller- therefore a plunge into the geldings past might serve as instructive to young and old- Sire: Eternity Prince, represents the still surviving male line of Majestic Prince, who was herald to mightiest Secretariat, in the 70’s USA- Majestic Prince, lost only his try in the Belmont Stakes, as he was seriously compromised by injury and the 12 unforgiving furlongs of our test of the champion- beaten by worthy foe Arts & Letters, the “prince” died of heart failure at age 15- he sired around 10% stakes winners and his link to Watermans Bay, is thru his purple bred son Majestic Light- recalled here as a handsome fellow with a big chest like a sprinter- Majestic Light, was a grandson of CCA Oaks heroine High Voltage. I suppose- and he won a number of G1 tests, yet when tested against the very best of his period he faltered a bit- his female family of 8-C is a popular world brand and 2013 Kentucky Derby winner Orb, is a fine example of the prowess of clan “Woodbine” -a daughter of king of stallions, Stockwell circa 1860- Eternity Range, raced around the globe even stopping to place in a Golden Gate Fields stakes race- sporting a dosage diagram of >11-4-14-1-2 or representation in all the salient categories of the dosage hypothesis- Eternity Range, stands or stood at the very extremity of humankind, Western Australia- stemming from the powerful 16-G family thru Calumet Farm matrons (I think) the family was recently represented by the swift Jimmy Choux, on the island continent- The female family of gelded Watermans Bay, are known as 2-E and they move from a matron by Chateau Margaux, circa 1832- the latter was a son of Wasp, the founder of clan 3-K - a group which for all intents and purposes seems to have disappeared from the top class of thoroughbreds in recent seasons- but that is the tale of most female families in the stud books they ebb and flow, and stakes winners of the highest class usually emerge from a strain of females emanating from a superior producer, which may be the reason that certain families only reach the top of the stairs in certain nations- and only the best families sustain an international reach- perhaps a good example being clan 9-B -which was established by a Mogul mare sometime before 1750 (?) --in America and the UK, the family has shown some taste for the higher ranges of the thoroughbred mountains, like Ron The Greek or Henrythenavigator, but on the rest of planet the family struggles to attain the top rung ( in the last half dozen years or so-h) anyhow, there is a point somewhere in the paragraph- great mares like Chelandry, have a habit of appearing in pedigrees of the best horses, in the case of Watermans Bay - the great Chelandry, exerts her influence as grandame to Heroic, the latter one of the most magnificent Australian race horses and sires in the books- in this panorama of Watermans Bay, Heroic, sired its 7th dam, Princess Cynthia (AUS) in 1932--- a photo of Heroic, reveals a type not unlike Bend Or, but seemingly pumped up on Helium!! Heroic, was inbred to Illuminata, thru her daughters Gas, and Chelandry- Heroic, was bred by Arrowfield Stud and appeared in 1921- he was to win over twenty races in his career including the AJC Derby & the Cox Plate - as a stallion he provided many outstanding runners to the Aussie sport- including Leila Vale & Hua & Nuffield & Cigarette- Returning to Watermans Bay, his broodmare sire array >Ron Bon, a speedy sort by Halo, the latter sire of world shaking stud Sunday Silence>Gielgud, famed Shakespearean and winner of a G2 event at Doncaster>Commoner, who was anything but, as he had 29 chefs in his classic house “aptitude”- as a stallion he was “poor” and he placed once in a Santa Anita Stakes as a racer>Smokey Eyes, bred in Ireland, he won stakes in England, and was shipped for stud duty to Australia in 1953, where he excelled at the skill- a daughter Kulali (?) winning the Queensland Oaks in the 60’s--- the all-important 5th dam of Watermans Bay, was Brim Lass (1955) by the richly bred and lightly raced (?) Brimstone, himself a son of “Darby” hero Dante. I would think Watermans Bay, is probably the best hoss off this family stem of 2-E in the last 60 years- The 2-E family has been represented in American racing in recent moons by Careless Jewel, and Java’s War (didn’t he win the 2013 Bluegrass stakes?) whatever; Aussie race fans may recollect such stars as He’s Remarkable & Duporth, from the 2-E divisions, and in South Africa, JJ The Jet Plane, was a mega-star and a 2-E stalwart.
