[tbs 정오뉴스] ▶(Report) Govt Welcomes Kim Jong-uns Offer To Hold Talks President Park Park Geun-hye and U.N. Secretary General Ban Ki-moon shared a New Years phone call this morning. They exchanged views on improving inter-Korean relations this year in response to Kim Jong-uns offer to hold summit talks with Park. On Thursday, the North Korean leader gave a televised New Years address during which he called for a big shift in South-North relations, saying that Pyongyang has no reason not to hold the highest-level talks. His unprecedented remarks have raised hope that Pyongyang will respond positively to Seouls recent offer for ministerial-level talks in January, to discuss pending issues, including the resumption of family reunions. Unification minister Ryoo Kihl-jae said he hopes the two Koreas will open a dialogue in the near future. Describing Kims speech as meaningful, Ryoo stressed that Seoul and Pyongyang are in need of substantive and candid discussions -- sentiment that was reiterated by the U.S., which also voiced support for better relations on the Korean Peninsula. The unification ministry said today that the government wishes to hold talks with the North without any strings attached and will continue to wait for a response.
