#FunFactFriday #Obamacare edition! Since our Republican friends can’t admit that Obamacare has had a positive impact and our Democratic friends havent necessarily done the best job promoting or explaining it, lets look at some facts. As always, feel free to comment, like, and SHARE this status! - Obamacare is not insurance, nor does it regulate the healthcare industry. It is a law that regulates the for-profit insurance industry. It is not a Government takeover of healthcare OR insurance. - Under the ACA children can remain on their parents insurance until age 26. Previously children had to be full time students to remain covered. However more and more, college graduates are getting internships or part-time work with no benefits and this left them uncovered. - Insurance companies can no longer deny coverage due to pre-existing conditions. In my opinion this is the single biggest benefit of the ACA. Imagine the medical expenses that could mount up during a lifetime if a child has a serious illness and was NEVER able to obtain health insurance. - The ACA banned lifetime maximums from policies. Insurance companies used to be able to set a maximum amount they would pay for health care. If you reached that maximum, you lost coverage, even if you were still sick and needing care. - The ACA has helped millions of Americans obtain health insurance, whether its signing up through a state exchange or healthcare.gov, allowing those who were previously denied coverage to get it, or allowing children to remain on their parents insurance longer. - Requiring insurance companies to cover those with pre-existing conditions and removing lifetime maximums has cost insurance companies more money. To make up for the reduced profits, the ACA included the individual mandate, requiring everyone to purchase and maintain health coverage, or pay a fine, just like with Auto insurance. This guarantees insurance companies millions of new customers, and motivates them to create competitive plans and prices to attract those customers. - Obamacare funds scholarships and loans designed to double the number of healthcare providers in five years, cuts down fraudulent doctor/supplier relationships, and requires background checks on all nursing home employees to prevent elder abuse. - The cost of health insurance has increased since Obamacare was passed into law. Healthcare premiums and costs have risen every year since the 40’s. This includes many years where costs rose by double digits. Preliminary estimates from the CBO and the Kaiser Family Foundation point to a slower rate of increase since the law has passed. Many economists and healthcare experts suspect it will take at least a few years to determine if the slowing is permanent or just a hiccup. - People making less than $45,960 or families making less than $94,200 may be eligible for free or low-cost coverage. -46% of the people who bought plans on the exchanges said the plans were LESS expensive than the ones they had in 2013, according to a Kaiser Family Foundation survey from March and April. 39% of enrollees said their new plans were more expensive. These higher rates mainly affected younger, healthier people who earn too much money to qualify for tax credits to help pay for coverage. 85% of everyone who enrolled got some subsidies. And the increases were likely a one-time bump, mainly caused by rules making the insurance coverage better. - The average premium increase on the exchanges next year will be 6%. - After the first enrollment period brought in more than 7 million paying customers and the promise of millions more in the future, health insurance companies are more confident to the extent that there will be 248 more health insurance plans available on the exchanges for 2015 than there were this year, a net increase of 25 percent (including a few companies that bowed out) compared to the first enrollment period. I think the statistics above prove that Obamacare is working, and is doing exponentially more good than bad. It’s certainly not a perfect law, and improvements can be made. In my opinion, one of the reasons it’s not better is that Republicans, FROM THE START have done nothing but oppose, obstruct, and straight up lie about this law. If you don’t believe me, I will be happy to provide example after example of this. If Republicans truly had the interest of the American public at heart, they would come to the table, discuss their concerns, and try to IMPROVE on the law instead of just rejecting it in totality without providing a viable alternative. We cannot continue to let “perfect” be the enemy of “good”. This law is GOOD, but it is not PERFECT (but what law is?). I encourage everyone to like, comment on, and share this status, whether you agree or not. As corny as it is, I keep doing these because people keep saying they like it, whether it’s because they agree, or whether it’s because they like arguing with me, I love doing it, and I hope people enjoy it! GBR!
