May 15, 1943. LFD is pumping out the cellar at the old Indiana Gas Company building on North 4th street. The two pumps at work are the 1921 IMK-4 piston pump and the 1938 YC Ahrens-Foxes. These buildings were originally used to produce illuminating gas by cooking coal. The two primary products were the gas and coke used in foundries. Another product was coal tar. While it was used in medicine, some was dumped into pits. This caused a problem with the rebuilding of the entrances to the Harrison bridge. They had to decontaminate the soil.
