Press release -- Traffic Accident with Power Outage, Telephone Rd. and Copland Dr., October 30, 2014, 12:38 a.m. On the above date and time, VPD responded to the intersection of Telephone Rd. and Copland Dr., to assist the California Highway Patrol (CHP) on a traffic collision that had just occurred. The driver of the single vehicle involved in the collision had been traveling northbound on Highway 101 at a high rate of speed, when he exited the highway at the northbound off-ramp for Telephone Rd., failed to stop at the intersection and ran the red light. There was a street crew working at the intersection and the vehicle collided into one of the parked utility trucks. The force of that impact caused the utility truck to strike a large high-voltage Edison pole, which was sheared in half. The pole, in addition to the live electrical wires, fell onto the driver’s vehicle and the utility truck, trapping the driver inside. The utility truck was not occupied at the time of the collision. The downed wires electrified the immediate area, including a nearby metal fence and a guardrail. VPD Officers Bryan Palmer and Edward McCain arrived on scene and heard the driver calling for help from inside the vehicle. Both officers immediately went to the aid of the driver and shortly after pulling him from the vehicle, both the driver’s vehicle and the utility truck burst into flames. After being taken to a safe distance from vehicles, the driver was treated by Ventura City Fire and transported to VCMC with serious injuries. The California Highway Patrol is handling the traffic collision investigation. Any questions regarding the power outage should be referred to Edison.
