So, expanding on our INTEGRATED CASTING thoughts, and as mentioned in our tweets this week… Are there many black actors out there who have got into a position where they are being cast in major or leading roles that do not specifically require a black person to be cast? Wracking our brains, and there are not too many names, and most of them are in the world of film and TV, rarely if ever venturing onto the stage (with a couple notable exceptions). Will Smith, Denzel Washington, James Earl Jones, Samuel L. Jackson from the US, Lennie James and Idris Elba from the UK. Are David Oyelowo, Hugh Quarshie, Daniel Kaluuya, Doña Croll, to be counted in this respect in the UK? Is there a stigma to that casting? Will the consensus be that someone is doing it as a stunt or gimmick or ticking certain boxes? That in its own way is a prejudicial form of thinking & needs to be overcome; and in that sense, do the audiences themselves play a role – even unconsciously – for the inequalities in casting? Is there a danger that some of audience will think it a gimmick? What do people think? Well be exploring more on Twitter too
