The Grizzly Bear Mine is a silver-gold mine located on Bear Creek, - TopicsExpress

The Grizzly Bear Mine is a silver-gold mine located on Bear Creek, a few miles south of Ouray CO, off Hwy550. The mine produced $1,000,000 between the years of 1875 and 1910, and is still mined occasionally today, depending on the market value of the minerals. I usually dont include trail shots in my posts, but in this one I wanted to make a point. This was an intense hike for me with my knees, but I took it slow. Everyone I met coming back down the trail said the same thing They would shake their heads and say... I just dont know they did it, like the miners carried the equipment on their back. Well all I have to say is the hero is this tale has four legs not two. As rough as the trail looked, it should be remembered that the original trail was on the opposite side of Bear Creek, and it included a boarding house. The trail was moved to its present location due to its being less affected by the weather. You can follow Bear Creek further upstream to the Yellow Jacket Mine. The trail crosses Bear Creek and the mine is inaccessible early in the season, due to the snow-melt swollen creek. Following the trail merges into Horsethief Trail and eventually leads to Engineer Pass and the Western Continental Divide.
