The Strength to Love II farm is building a unique, financially self-sustaining urban farm that was envisioned and initially supported by Strength to Love II, Big City Farms, and the City of Baltimore. The project demonstrates how large vacant lots can accommodate six or more hoop house greenhouses, each 3,000 square feet, along with a rainwater harvesting system that can provide all of the water needed for irrigation of the farm. The buried rainwater storage tanks also provide a thermal mass that supports a plant seedling nursery above them and can be converted to a fish farm. A series of rain gardens provide storm water buffers and will irrigate a 300 foot living fence of fig trees, blueberry bushes, and blackberry bushes. the gardens will also provide an environment for the growth of an assortment of companion plants and "good bugs". this 63000 gallon storage area will also make possible a thermal mass of stones that will provide a continuing flow of 55 degree air that will be used to cool and heat greenhouses. a large herb garden, bee hives and a compost site are also possible. But it is the training and jobs to local citizens in the field of state of the art economically viable new industry that is the primary driving force. And the development of a new geographical and social center in the nutritional desert of a unempowered neighborhood is the by product. i am honored and motivated to be the site manager and part of the design team it is my passion to be of use in this way. currently i am giving tours and information to anyone who wants to be a part or just give advise and counsel in this very diverse undertaking. my contact info is doblecjr@gmail please excuse this probable violation of a social network
