To explain [this particular example of government violation of basic liberties] that isnt so completely Libertarian and paranoid as your friends summation... THATS... ...Libertarian and paranoid... Fear of government is not paranoid, it is vindicated by historical precedent. History shows that the typical state of humankind is one of dictatorship and bondage to the State. To claim that it is paranoid to fear a government which now legally claims the authority to detain anyone in the world (including you) indefinitely without trial or due process and torture you is the towering height of useful idiocy. Denouncing those who question the official mythology as mentally ill or paranoid is a Bolshevist tactic used to silence dissidents, used specifically because the Bolshevists in question recognize they do not have Reason and Evidence on their side. That said, Im pretty optimistic in the long run for the future of liberty, far more than I would have been in say, late Weimar Germany or late Czarist Russia, but on the other hand it is far more psychotic to think youre completely safe and free, or even safe and free at all, than to think American politicians would install a dictatorship as brutal as that of Maoist China if sociological conditions allowed them to.
