Two Ogdensburg men indicted by grand jury By W.T. ECKERT SATURDAY, SEPTEMBER 7, 2013 ARTICLE OPTIONS AA CANTON — A St. Lawrence County grand jury has indicted the Ogdensburg man charged with bribing a witness while in an effort to assist his son at a trial. It is alleged that between February and October 2012, Orrie J. “Joe” Howe, 59, 7035C Route 37, attempted to bribe Michael J. Wells, who was a witness or a person about to be called as a witness in the then pending trial against Travis M. Howe. The indictment alleges that an understanding between the elder Mr. Howe and Wells that his testimony would be influenced under the terms of the agreement. Travis M. Howe, 27, was headed for trial but pleaded guilty in October to first-degree robbery for his role in a March 2011 armed robbery at Twin Bridges Convenient Mart & Deli, 40 Main St., Ogdensburg. St. Lawrence County Judge Jerome J. Richards sentenced the younger Howe to 12 years in prison in December,. Wells, who is also serving 12 years in state prison for his part in the robbery, is also facing charges by the grand jury with bribe receiving by a witness. An Aug. 29 outburst by Wells in county court ended with him rejecting a plea deal with the St. Lawrence County District Attorney’s office that would have reduced that charge. The grand jury also indicted Melvin H. Perry, 45, 720 Jay St., Ogdensburg, for two counts of second-degree burglary. The charges are the result of two separate incidents in which Perry allegedly burglarized homes. The incident were reportedly drug related. It is alleged that on June 26 Perry entered the residence of Gloria and Michael McLear with the intent to commit a crime Additionally, it is alleged that in July he entered the home of Betty Bice, also with the intent to commit a crime.
