CHEMICAL REACTION MAY HAVE PROVIDED ENOUGH HYDROGEN ‘FOOD’ TO SUSTAIN LIFE ON MARS A new study, led by the University of Colorado at Boulder, has shown that a chemical reaction between iron-bearing minerals and water may produce enough hydrogen to sustain microbial communities inhabiting the pores and cracks within the rock beneath Earth’s ocean floor and some continents. This in turn suggests that hydrogen-dependent life could have existed within iron-rich igneous rocks on Mars that were in contact with water in the past.
