Emmas an old musical stager. Having seen Sweeney Todd four times as an acting student (Lansbury : Four times! Good god!, when I met her then), I know the show really well (turned down a chance to play Tobias once when the situation wasnt right, idiot that I am). I enjoyed Emma T. in it (though she missed landing some of Mrs. Ls bits), would love to see her in a rehearsed production with a Sweeney who can act. Bryn T. sang English like hes Italian, and (as Cariou did three of the four times I saw it) was a monster from his first entrance, which gave the first act no where to go but catch up with him. Sans the heavy period production Prince created, several of the plot points were laid bare as they only work in a period penny dreadful. The Anthony and Tobias were the best Ive seen, really acted. But I didnt love it at all, and hope the lets-throw-together-a-semi-staged-production of a very difficult work and show it on PBS fashion will pass.
