Gas Safe Register What is Gas Safe Register? Gas Safe Register is the official list of gas engineers who are qualified to work safely and legally on gas appliances. By law gas engineers must be on the Gas Safe Register. Gas Safe Register replaced CORGI in Great Britain and Isle of Man on 1 April 2009 and in Northern Ireland and Guernsey on 1 April 2010. Only use a Gas Safe registered engineer to fit, fix or service your appliances. Why did Gas Safe Register take over from CORGI? The HSE (Health and Safety Executive) undertook a review of gas safety in 2006. This review concluded that there was a need for a clearer focus on gas safety and a strong case for modernizing the gas registration scheme to bring added benefits to gas consumers, as well as across the industry. What is the law? Gas Safe Register deals with all aspects of the downstream gas industry covered by the following regulations: • Great Britain: The Gas Safety (Installation and Use) Regulations 1998 • Isle of Man: The Gas Safety (Installation and Use) Regulations 1994 as amended and applied by the Gas Safety (Application) Order 1996 • Northern Ireland: The Gas Safety (Installation & Use) Regulations (Northern Ireland) 2004 • Guernsey: The Health and Safety (Gas) (Guernsey) Ordinance, 2006 It covers both piped natural gas and liquefied petroleum gas (LPG). It is law that anyone carrying out gas work that is within the scope of the Regulations is on the Gas Safe Register. The register is there to protect consumers from unsafe gas work. Information for callers getting gas work done • By law gas engineers must be on the Gas Safe Register. This replaced CORGI in Great Britain and Isle of Man on 1 April 2009 and in Northern Ireland and Guernsey on 1 April 2010 • Only use a Gas Safe registered engineer to fit, fix or service your gas appliances • If someone other than a Gas Safe registered engineer undertakes gas work, they are breaking the law and could put lives at risk • Always ask for your engineer’s Gas Safe Register ID card. Emergencies • If you smell gas or think there might be a gas leak: turn off the gas at the meter, extinguish naked flames, open windows and immediately call the gas emergency number for your area. Seek medical advice if you feel unwell • Gas emergency contacts: o Great Britain and Guernsey: 0800 111 999 o Isle of Man: 0808 1624 444 o Northern Ireland: 0800 002 001 o For LPG contact your LPG supplier Additional info for tenants • Your landlord should ensure the gas appliances they provide are safe • Check the ID card of any gas engineer that comes to do work at your property. The engineer must be Gas Safe registered • Co-operate with your landlord and let an engineer in whenever a gas safety check or maintenance is required • Make sure your landlord supplies you with a copy of the safety check within 28 days of it being carried out or before you move in • If you think a gas appliance is faulty turn it off and let your landlord know immediately. Additional info for landlords • Landlords are responsible for making sure gas appliances are safe • All appliances must have a safety check carried out every 12 months by a Gas Safe registered engineer • You must give your tenant a record of that safety check within 28 days or to a new tenant before they move in. You must keep a record of each safety check for two years • Letting agents need to be sure of exactly who is managing the gas duties at all properties. If it’s contractually your responsibility, then the same conditions apply to you as that of the landlord. Trade • CORGI registration ended in Great Britain and Isle of Man on 1 April 2009 and in Northern Ireland and Guernsey on 1 April 2010 • Your registration must be with Gas Safe Register to allow you to work legally • If you are joining for the first time Gas Safe Register will accept ACS qualifications from a recognised awarding body as evidence of competence.
