I never ever canter randomly, whether on an event horse, on a Morgan like Roxie here, in a jumping saddle, or a dressage saddle, I constantly am working to improve my eye for a distance. I`ll see a hoofprint, a leaf, a dandelion out in front of me, and when I think I`m 3 or 4 or 5 strides out, I`ll say to myself, 5-4-3=2-1, and I`ll either be just right, too close or too long. By doing this simple exercise thousands and thousands of times, I get so that I rarely miss. And it`s super low stress on the horse. And it helps me not only recognize the distance, it gives me a feel for the canter that`s adjustable, that, as Le Goff said, combines balance and impulsion. I urge people in lessons and clinics to do this, but most don`t, once they are home and on their own. Only the super hungry ones will. Most riders, I find, only sort of want to be good, call me a cynic---hahahaha. Why am I laughing? I should be crying---hahahaha!!! Hey--getting good takes real work, and who wants THAT unpleasantness?
