INFO: Took notes from Joel Salatin (Polyface Farms) web interview on 10/9 and was happy that he reiterated some of the things we try to convey to our clients. Some examples: Farming as a business: No better time in history that is more conducive to making a living in farming (customers valuing good local food, technology) Starting in farming: Get started by getting started (take the first step, no need plan completely before starting) Financial planning: Most businesses fail because they run out of cash, not business (understanding Cashflow is critical) Land: Leasing land is ok, length of time not a dealbreaker (dont be afraid of investing in leased land, especially if you can negotiate improvements as depreciable) Marketing: Identify your tribe (know your target market and focus on them) Pricing: Price for your tribe, have detailed knowledge of the time it takes to do everything (Cost of Production analysis) If you want my complete notes, email me [email protected]
