It definitely is not one of those romantic “we meet, see and conquer”, “diamonds and roses”, “love at first sight”, “Mills and boon” cut, copy paste. Then, is it “luck by chance?” or the profound “marriages are made in heaven”? We are still bewildered! Because no matter how smart we thought we were, how desperately we wished then to prolong our “freedom to flirt”, when the Cinderella clock struck on 21st April 1995, we could not runway! With blessings from all our elders, wishes from friends, under the strict supervision of a Brahmin priest, bright and brilliant ceremony, we took the VOW! Ours was after all not meant to be the story of the “runaway bride/ groom”. Around October 1994, two Bangali bhodrolok (Bengali Gentleman) and their beloved wives, residing in two different corners of Kolkata, decided, it was time for them to fulfil an important responsibility as a parent. Settle their grown up mischievous, unruly and untamed child. The Sanyals their only son and the Ganguly’s their elder daughter. The best way they believed they could achieve this was to shackle their kids with the time tested formula of “get them married!” Now, it is about marriage in the times of “The Telegraph” and the “Anando Bazar Patrika”s, the Ganguly’s cited that “wanted a suitable bride types write up”. Obviously, no emails but exchange of “hater lekha (hand written)” inland letters followed by phone calls, connected the families. Sounds like am talking about fossils, but you need to hold on. We are talking about moms and dads, who may be tech challenged in today’s net world, but are modern in true sense. Thus the “girl must meet the boy”, have a few rounds of discussions and then decide! 31st of Dec 1994, is Jab (when) we met for the first time, intending to freak out, no harm in “let’s be friends types “ meeting each other. After all who can ever dare to tie us by marriage? You already know the rest! This story is all about how two hard NUTs keep their VOW to NEVER let the other crack!
