Mark, Tambuwal, Baraje eulogise Nigeria, preach peace, reconciliation Senate President David Mark; Speaker, House of Representatives, Aminu Tambuwal; and National Chairman of the breakaway faction of the Peoples Democratic Party, Kawu Baraje, on Monday in their separate Independence anniversary messages appraised progress made by the country in its 53 years of independence and said peace was required to move forward. Mark said that Nigeria had made appreciable progress worthy of commendation despite its numerous challenges, adding however that the country was yet to achieve its full potentials. The Senate President in a statement by his Chief Press Secretary, Mr. Paul Mumeh, said, “Although we are yet to get to the level of our dreams, nobody can deny the fact that we have recorded some landmark achievements since the colonial masters left our shores. “Besides the infrastructural developments across the country, we now have skilled and qualified manpower in virtually all fields of human endeavour.” Mark therefore implored Nigerians to renew hope and faith in “the capacity and capabilities of our people to rise to a level when citizens could enjoy an internationally-acceptable standard of living thus earning the status of a developed nation.” He also called for support and cooperation of all Nigerians in the task of nation-building. He said, “All of us may not be good doctors, good lawyers , good writers or good engineers but we can all contribute our quota where we have comparative advantages to make our country a better place. “We must therefore strive to harness our human and material resources in a way and manner that would engender development in all ramifications.” The Senate President noted that the current challenges being faced by the country, especially the insecurity situation, and canvassed a review of approaches in order to end the menace. He recalled the setbacks occasioned by the 30-month-old civil war fought with blood, tears and sweat; the ethno-religious conflicts and kidnapping, and prayed for wise counsel to prevail. As stakeholders, Mark urged Nigerians to see “the nation and indeed ‘Project Nigeria’ as our own because nobody destroys what he or she owns”. Tambuwal urged Nigerians to promote unity, peace and reconciliation in the country, according to a statement issued by the Speaker’s Special Adviser on Media and Public Affairs, Malam Imam Imam. The statement quoted Tambuwal as urging Nigerians to work toward promoting the tenets of democracy, good governance and responsible citizenry. He said the current challenges confronting the nation were surmountable and appealed to the political elite to moderate their utterances and be mindful of their responsibility to the nation. The Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Mr. Emeka Ihedioha, said that Nigeria’s future remained bright in spite of challenges of national development. Ihedioha, therefore, enjoined Nigerians to remain optimistic and committed to making the country realise its potential and achieve its “God given destiny.” Baraje in a statement on Nigeria’s 53rd independence anniversary called on Nigerian youths and students not to be despair because of the way the present administration was handling issues affecting them, especially the prolonged strike of the Academic Staff Union of Universities. He said that necessary suggestions were being made to the Presidency and the Federal Ministry of Education on the best way to end the strike very soon. He therefore promised that the leadership of the new PDP was unrelenting in its commitment to continue to struggle until practical empowerment of the less-privileged is achieved.
