PLEASE SIGN & SHARE WIDELY-URGENTLY THIS VIP PETITION! ▬►bit.ly/1rX7WSi ◕A recent undercover Oceana investigation revealed that this year illegal driftnet gillnets have been used again in Tangier, Morocco. These nets entangle anything large and unlucky enough to swim past. ◕Oceana documented extensive evidence of the illegal drift gillnet use in Tangier: from the marks on fish being sold in the market, to fisherman loading the illegal drift gillnets on board their vessels, small and large. Worse, this illegal activity took place in an area connecting the Mediterranean to the Atlantic—an important migration path for whales and dolphins. These gentle, intelligent animals are being tragically caught and killed in the nets. ◕The U.S. and European Union provided Morocco financial aid to phase out drift gillnets. Although that was an important victory itself, critical enforcement is clearly failing. We need YOUR help to get our leaders to take action to stop this again, and for good. ◕With your help, we can get these deadly, invisible walls of death out of the water and end this mockery. The nets not only torture sea life, slowly drowning dolphins, whales, and sea turtles, but they also hurt honest fisherman who catch swordfish locally and legally. Illegally obtained swordfish are imported into Spain and are then to Italy, cheating fisherman and conscientious buyers in these other countries. ◕In 2010, Morocco was applauded for outlawing drift gillnets, finally catching up to the EU ban seven years prior. However, now that the insincerity of Morocco’s drift gillnet ban has been uncovered and vessels have been seen resuming illegal fishing right in front of Moroccan authorities, it is clear that more drastic measures are needed from authorities at all levels. ◕Many marine animal lives have already been ended, but it’s not too late to save many more and ensure that the continued use of drift gillnets ends. If Morocco continues to get away with illegal fishing practices, this could send a message to other illegal fisherman that they can get away with using this illegal gear too. ◕Join Oceana and tell President Obama to take action! Don’t let Morocco get away with blatantly deceiving the world and continuing its unsustainable fishing practices... thank you !
