Real Dough at Café 64 You may already know about our café in outback New South Wales … Known as Café 64, it’s a disability service enterprise that employs 21 people with a disability. And it’s not just a café – it’s also a meeting place for Walgett locals and visitors alike. NOVA CEO Martin Wren guarantees Café 64 has the best coffee within a hundred miles. And he’d know. He’s been travelling from western Sydney to Walgett since 2005 when he first came up with the idea for the café. But Café 64 serves more than great coffee. Our big news is that we recently expanded into the premises next door so we could create more space for our indigenous art gallery and start baking bread and pizza. And the pizza’s just walking out the door! Not only are we making real coffee and baking real bread, but our staff are earning real dough! Staff at Café 64 earn three times the national average for people in supported employment ($205 compared $97) yet work just two-thirds the number of hours for the national average (15 compared 23). As well, staff health is always taken into consideration: ‘I’ve never had a job that’s allowed me to cope with my ongoing health problems the way Café 64 does. It’s hard having a regular job in outback Australia. We have casual work, but not much else. I don’t feel like a worthy person unless I’m employed.’ Adam, Café 64 All staff are trained and qualified, including Certificate I and II in Hospitality (Kitchen Operations), Certificate I in Food Preparation, and Barista Certificates. Café 64 also provides work experience placements for local school students. Café 64: real coffee + real bread + real wages = real hope for the future. youtu.be/dfwt5-L2KJw Café 64 café, indigenous art gallery, meeting place 64 Wee Waa St, Walgett, NSW 02 6828 3440
